It’s not controversial to say that parents should feed their children. If they struggle we should help them, according to their own circumstances and to the level of help needed to restore them to their own capabilities. There isn’t a one size fits all solution I’m afraid.
Socialists will argue for a nationalised solution, but that will create huge gaps. For example, what about families with children too young for school? How does such a system best identify those in need who might not have all the right ‘papers’?
That’s why I support local solutions. Local councils, charities and community groups are best placed. They know their communities and they know the localised needs. They can help in ways a national system just can’t.
There are those who attack me as a Conservative Councillor who also helps to run a charity doing just that – local tailored help. They say it’s inconsistent with my party’s ideology. But it’s just not true.
As a Conservative I believe in giving the right kind of help, at the right time to the people who need it the most. I believe in helping people to get out of poverty and improve their lives. What’s so wrong with that?!
